red sandstone-siltstone

Outcrop of the Upper Cretaceous red sandstone and siltstone. Left bank of the Quango river. Rocks are weakly cemented and are being easily weathered to sand in the tropical climate. That explains the lack of boulder and gravel-size alluvial material in the upper stream of the Quango river. Bottom of the river and its tributaries is a single homogenous, weakly fractured “plate” or crust. Photo and captions by Oleg Khotylev, Moscow State University
